Hello world!

Welcome to Thow Kwang Clay Artists’ blog!

We are a group of experienced and beginner clay artists drawn together by our interest in ceramics and all things clay. In a couple of months, we hope to conduct a wood-firing in a 64-year-old dragon kiln, which has been sitting quietly by our workshop, waiting for us to stoke its fires once again.

Some of us were involved in two previous wood-firings and it was a learning experience. Much of the knowledge about our local traditional wood-firing has been lost with the decline of Singapore’s pottery industry in the early 1980s. It was through research and interviews with the old practitioners that we managed to collect nuggets of information on the how-to aspects of wood-firing. However, there are still gaps in our knowledge base. We hope to build on those past experiences and record the processes and results of our upcoming wood-firing.

We are intrigued by the unique fire-and-ash look of wood-fired pieces. At the same time, we are also apprehensive over the “we don’t know what we gonna get” results due to our lack of hands-on experience with wood-firing. Therefore, this will be our creative space where we will share our clay explorations, ideas and experiments as we rediscover the art and joy of wood-firing.

So join us in our clay adventures and …. ummm…. sometimes misadventures! 🙂

Good intro with some fun comments. I like it, and hope to see a picture of all the artists involved in this page too.
